Position: Lead Plumber

Location: Christ Medical Center; Oak Lawn, IL.

Full Time; 1st shift

Major Responsibilities:
Provides effective supervision and management of associates assigned to the plumbing team. Maintains the plumbing function throughout the hospital.

  • Working collaboratively with the manager, establishes goals and quality standards for the plumbing team. Routinely inspects, installs, repairs and replaces pipes, fittings, valves and pumps to maintain hospital water and drainage systems.
  • Collaborates with the department manager on hiring, progressive discipline, rewards and recognition of associates.
  • Established work schedules for their team to ensure proper coverage. Provides guidance and oversight on the use of contractors to supplement the work of associates assigned to the department.
  • Oversees administrative actions required of their assigned team.
  • Leads the onboarding process for orientation and training of plumbers to increase knowledge, skills and proficiency.
  • Supervises the work of other maintenance personnel assigned to plumbing projects.
  • Prepares and submits to Construction Department proper documentation of modifications to existing systems.
  • Inspects and ensures all work is done to the highest quality standards, providing regular performance feedback to associates. Provides manager with draft annual performance appraisals.
  • Provide timely and accurate recommendations for the annual operating budget and 5-year infrastructure capital plan. Manages the expenditures to meet the department budget goals.
  • Prioritizes and schedules associates to perform corrective, preventative and predictive maintenance of plumbing systems.

Supervises plumbing system repairs and/or installations or replacements as assigned or as required by the situation in a timely and workmanlike fashion.

  • Performs major plumbing maintenance and repairs replacing piping, faucets, sinks, commodes, hot water heaters, ejector pumps, sump pumps, etc.
  • Operates drain cleaning equipment to clear blocked drain or sewer lines and has knowledge of shutoff valve operation and locations for domestic water systems, heating water systems, water mains etc.
  • Completes general hospital maintenance work as assigned.
  • Follows proper safety and infection prevention procedures.

Establishes, monitors and improves the preventive maintenance and inspection program and procedures for all building plumbing systems and equipment per manufactures recommendation and regulatory requirements.

  • Ensures plumbing associates and vendors complete assigned PMs by the established deadline.
  • Ensures all new areas and assigned equipment in inventoried and preventive/predictive tasks and frequencies are consistent with manufactures recommendations and regulatory standards.
  • Ensures all plumbing associates and vendors properly document all actions through log books or the CMMS.
  • Maintains documentation required by regulatory standards in a format easily retrieved and audited.
  • Takes appropriate action on problems reported and not resolved during PM inspections.
  • Inspects and ensures work completed by plumbers and vendors is done to the highest quality standards.

Establishes, monitors and improves the standard operating policy and procedures of plumbing systems.

  • Reads blueprints and trouble shoots problems. Advises parts coordinator of proper inventory levels to be maintained on plumbing materials.
  • Ensures plumbing team responds to building occupant requests in a timely and professional manner. Keeps requesters appraised of the status of corrective action and service requests.
  • Organizes and maintains accurate records and reports of equipment startups, failures, problems and completed work in the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Establishes equipment rounds and standing instructions to ensure all equipment is operating properly.
  • Reviews all findings and actions taken in the CMMS and takes appropriate action to follow up.
  • Establishes, trains, monitors and supervises emergency procedures associates with leaks, floods, water outages, restricted drain lines, fires, power outages, equipment failures and other disruptions of utilities and executes those procedures in a timely safe and correct manner.

Education/Experience Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Completion of trade school / apprenticeship
  • 5+ yrs prior experience
  • 3 years leadership experience

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Working knowledge of computerized maintenance system, pneumatic tube system, medical gas order requests.
  • Licensed plumber, by the State of Illinois, Department of Public Health.
  • State of Illinois Drivers License

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Exposure to hazardous chemicals and toxic substances.
  • Ability to climb, push, pull, bend, and reach, as needed to perform essential job activities.
  • Mobility to access work areas.
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting (lifting 50 to 100 pounds occasionally and/or 25 to 50 pounds frequently and/or 10 to 20 pounds constantly).
  • Twenty-Four hour call-in
  • This requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 12/17/2014.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For lifts over 35 pounds, lifting equipment is expected to be used or lift with at least one other associate when available. Unique lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case by case basis. May be required to lift greater than 35 pounds from floor to waist.
