- Lifts and transports patients to and from wheelchairs, stretchers or beds, properly positioning and securing patient using proper body mechanics. Ensures the comfort of the patient by being attentive, offering blankets. Follows all posted precaution signs.
- Transports patients to their destinations. May also be responsible for transporting other items such as patient belongings, specimens, carts, wheelchairs and other equipment to their destinations.
- Contacts clinical staff immediately regarding changes to a patient’s condition, or if an issue arises with patient’s equipment during transport.
- Verifies and documents correct patient identification by comparing information from the printed ticket to ride to patient wristband.
- Using electronic software, the transporter will track when assignments are initiated, completed, delayed, or cancelled,
- Collects and returns equipment to the proper holding areas. Disinfects and inspects transport equipment before and after use. Maintains equipment and reports equipment in need of repair.
- Maintain appropriate confidentiality of patient information at all times.
- May be responsible for collection of patient equipment from soiled utility rooms.
- May be responsible for pick-up and delivery of patient medication, excluding controlled substances.
Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
- Excellent Communication Skills
- Demonstrated experience in customer service
- Satisfactory completion in safe patient handling for transporters within one month of start date.
- Ability to assess status of equipment to ensure it is in safe working condition.
- Ability to assess and determine the best routes within hospital to reach desired destinations.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Must be able to walk up to 95% of the workday.
- Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bent and twist at various times throughout the workday.
- Exposed to blood and body fluids, contagious diseases, biohazrardous materials and radiation hazards throughout the workday, therefore, protective clothing must be worn as necessary.
- Must be able to operate all equipment necessary to perform the job, including repetitive use of feet required in working with surgical carts.
- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other team member, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
