This position will support the Advocate Health Midwest Region Investigational Drug Services Team and primarily be based out of the ALGH hub in Park Ridge, IL. Daily responsibilities include supporting on site dispensing operations for IL investigational products study start up (heavy oncology study needs), also with the expectation of covering long-term PTO for the WI hub in Milwaukee, WI (planned in advance, mileage reimbursed, no WI license required for coverage activities).

Major Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the clinical pharmacy liaison to the site or system service line. Demonstrates expertise in clinical practice including appropriate drug therapy for patients and prevention/resolution of drug related problems. Provides clinical support to others for more complex cases, applying in-depth knowledge in specialty area. Solves complex problems and uses specialty expertise as a resource to assist others. Ensures all team members are aware of unique patient situations.
  • Optimizes medication-related continuity of care at admission, transfer and discharge for the service line.
  • Leads medication safety advancements and performance improvement activities for pharmacy services in specialty service line. Routinely participates in specialty work groups including councils, committees and ad hoc teams.
  • Advances change in service line to ensure clinically appropriate cost effective medication therapies. Facilitates change implementation within the service line including physicians, nurses and pharmacists.
  • Designs drug distribution processes to meet patient care needs in service line. Communicates patient specific dispensing needs to all team members in functional/specialty area.
  • Leads pharmacy department training programs.for the service line. Orients/trains new pharmacy team members. Routinely precepts students and residents, and coordinates resident/student rotations. Provides input to development and improvements in training programs. Precepts resident projects. Accountable for team member development in service area. Provides direction to pharmacy technicians to ensure smooth workflow and service standards.
  • Provides front-line staffing in specialty area as called upon. Maintains advanced skills in practice area. Serves as an exemplary role model for all pharmacists in the service area.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to continued individual professional growth and leadership in the advancement of the pharmacy profession. Contributes to the literature through publications and presentations.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • Pharmacist license issued by the state in which the team member practices.
  • Patient facing teammates may be required to have two certifications:  Immunization and non-vaccine injectable to be granted from the state of WI or if from out of state, the program is approved by the accreditation council for pharmacy education (ACPE) or by the WI pharmacy examining board.  

Education Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy.

Experience Required:

  • Typically requires 5 years of experience in specialty residency training or pharmacy.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Specialty certification required (for external hires, certification must be obtained within one year of hire).
  • Demonstrated decision making, team building, customer service, and conflict resolution
  • Maintains advanced skills in an areas of practice, demonstrating a commitment to continuing professional growth and advancement of the pharmacy profession
  • Strong computer skills
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated presentation, facilitation, and training development skills.
  • Life support training courses may be required dependent on department discretion 

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
  • Will occasionally lift up to 35 lbs. without assistance.
  • Must have functional speech, vision, and hearing.
  • Will be exposed to chemical hazards.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
  • Exposed to normal office environment.
  • May be exposed to chemical and hazardous waste as well as blood and body fluids and communicable disease. Therefore, protective clothing and equipment must be worn as necessary.
