Major Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with the rehabilitation team, staff and other departments to facilitate development and implementation of support tools and technology that enhance the ability of clinical staff to deliver high quality services in a cost-effective manner, to develop interdisciplinary processes that support integrated patient care, and to facilitate implementation of initiatives that enhance service, quality and/or compliance.
  • Maintains the standard process for competency identification, development and validation within an assigned market. Acts as a resource in the development of specific competencies.
  • Coordinates the on-site student shadowing and educational in-services to meet the identified staff needs. Evaluates program effectiveness of educational activities and makes adjustments as appropriate.
  • Develops and maintains the new hire orientation process and training.
  • Assists with interviewing and selection of new employees, staff development, providing performance feedback, and coordinating and providing training/orienting new hires.
  • Acts as a resource and mentor to employees, which includes job shadowing, training/orienting, providing work direction, and giving input on performance. Monitors and reviews progress and accuracy of work, directs efforts and provides guidance on more complex issues.
  • Maintains knowledge on compliance and accreditation requirements regarding staff education and clinical practice.
  • May provide patient care activities according to standards and functions of their individual professional practice.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department’s policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • Physical Therapist license issued by the state of Wisconsin, or
  • Occupational Therapist license issued by the state of Wisconsin, or
  • Speech-Language Pathology license issued by the state of Wisconsin, or
  • Athletic Trainer license issued by the state of Wisconsin, and
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required.

Education Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Therapy, or
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Therapy, or
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Speech Pathology.

Experience Required:

  • Typically requires 5 years of experience in a staff therapist position, demonstrating excellent clinical skills.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Demonstrated skills in project management, problem solving, decision making, team building, time management, customer service, and conflict resolution.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and engage staff, and to create new systems and approaches.
  • Proven ability to effectively manage change with employees.
  • Intermediate computer skills including experience in use of Microsoft Office or similar products.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organization skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with physicians, staff, community partners, and other customers.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Exposed to a normal office environment.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, and squat throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to:
  • lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist.
  • Lift up to 10 lbs. from waist to overhead.
  • Lift and carry up to 40 lbs. at waist height a reasonable distance.
  • Must be able to:
  • push/pull with 30 lbs. of force.
  • Perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present.
  • Position requires repetitive use of hands:
  • Simple grasping of 5-15 lbs. 20% of the workday.
  • Pushing/pulling up to 75-100 lbs. 10% of the day.
  • Fine manipulation of hands during massage and joint mobilization.
  • Must have functional use of senses to allow for effective communication.
  • May be exposed to electrical and chemical hazards as well as blood and body fluids; therefore must have ability to wear protective clothing as needed.
  • Position may require travel; therefore may be exposed to road and weather hazards.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
