The Advanced Practice Director Medical Education oversees, designs, implements, and monitors learning programs, processes, and experiences of Advanced Practice Clinician (APC) and Anesthesia Assistant (AA) clinical students and clinical preceptors in the Advocate Health Midwest Region.  This role has content expertise in APC and AA education, clinical learning experiences, preceptor development, and fostering interprofessional clinical learning and collaboration. This role partners across the region with the Medical Group, APC leadership, and clinician recruitment teams in identifying and fostering academic relationships to drive strategic and diverse workforce pipeline development and recruitment of clinical learners.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provides overall vision, monitoring, and oversite for the program in collaboration with medical education leaders.  
  • Coordinates, facilitates, and evaluates high quality APC and AA student and preceptor experiences in collaboration with other medical education leaders and staff. 
  • Develops programming and processes for recruitment, retention and development of preceptors. 
  • Ensures student and preceptor compliance with policies and procedures related to medical education, patient and teammate safety.  
  • Partners across academic affairs, Medical Group, clinician recruitment and academic programs to support diverse and strategic workforce pipelines, learning experiences, and recruitment of clinician students into organization. 
  • Participates in other duties related to Academic Affairs including but not limited to: budget, academic contracting, and provide oversight of the market clinical student teams to ensure alignment with APC and medical group strategy.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • Active RN, APNP or APRN license in State of Wisconsin or Illinois AND Active board certification
  • OR
  • Active PA license in State of Wisconsin or Illinois AND Active PA board certification
  • Active DEA registration prior to hire
  • If Illinois practice: active Illinois Controlled Substance License prior to hire
  • Active BLS and/or ACLS, PALS, NRP as required by clinical practice prior to or within 6 months of hire

Education Required:

Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse

Experience Required:

Requires 7 years of experience as a practicing Advanced Practice Clinician; 5 years of experience in clinical teaching in an integrated health system. The ideal candidate will have practiced for at least 7 years as an Advanced Practice Clinician in an integrated health system. Additionally, experience as faculty in an academic program, as a clinical preceptor, or in planning and/or coordinating learning for clinical learners and/or clinician teachers is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of medical practice, clinical operational structures and systems, and policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of APC and AA educational tracks, degree programs and an understanding of accreditation requirements.
  • Demonstrated excellence in clinical care, clinical teaching, skills in organization, planning and the development of strategic plans.
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience with human subjects’ protection processes and the evidence-based research and quality improvement process.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of teammates and external partners.
  • Demonstrated skills in problem-solving, conflict resolution, negotiation and diplomacy.
  • Demonstrated success in developing positive relationships and working cohesively with a variety of medical staff, physician groups, organizational and community/academic leaders.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Medical Group of Advocate Health’s Midwest Region advanced practice clinician leadership structure.
  • Demonstrated experience with carrying projects from ideation phase to execution and evaluation.
