- Interprets prescriptions and assists patients in selecting appropriate eyewear. Takes optical measurements. Measures and fits all eyewear. Instruct patients in cleaning and handling of eyewear. Evaluates patients with assistance in lens type based on their needs.
- Repairs, adjusts and dispenses prescription lenses and frames. Inspects all eyewear to ensure quality prior to dispensing to patient.
- Assists with maintenance of material and supply inventory. Assists in care and upkeep of department equipment, supplies and work area.
- Maintains accurate and up-to-date patient records. Files records, which include patient charges and applicable third party coverage of eyewear. Assists in the preparation and writing of reports including daily deposits, inventory reports, and other reports as needed.
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department’s policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.
Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

Education Required:
- High School Graduate.
Experience Required:
- Typically requires 1 year of experience in an optician role that includes dispensing eyeglasses, knowledge of equipment, lenses, frames and new optometry technology.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
- Basic computer skills including experience using mainframe or personal computer, which includes Microsoft Office and Windows applications.
- Good customer service and communication skills. Ability to communicate clearly with staff and patients through personal contact, telephone and writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, physicians, and other allied health care personnel.
- Must possess a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to read, interpret and apply departmental policies and procedures. Ability to apply written guidelines and work practices to make decisions and solve problems.
- Skilled in the instruction of cleaning and handling eyewear.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medical preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
- Standing or walking for extensive periods of time approximately 80% of workday.
- Frequently lifts and carries supplies up to 10 lbs.
- Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
- Position may require travel, therefore, may be exposed to road and weather hazards.
