Major Responsibilities:

  • Develops and maintains fitness programs for internal and external customers. Collects appropriate data specific to diagnosis, health history and program goals. Assists therapist supervision and performance exercise program for their patients.
  • Performs risk factor analysis according to ACSM guidelines, fitness assessments, and exercise tolerance test. Interprets physiological, environmental and medical data and modifies exercise prescription/program as needed.
  • Communicates status of participants to physicians or therapists and makes appropriate adjustments. Documents information completely and according to JCAHO, insurance and department guidelines.
  • Conducts or participates in educational/promotional programs for the hospital and/or community. Performs one on one or group education classes such as body composition, blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes control, nutrition and/or home exercise programs.
  • Develops educational/promotional programs to educate customers and to market services. Works with Marketing and Health In Business to promote wellness/fitness services. Provides information for articles written pertaining to fitness/wellness and participates as a rehab representative for already organized events.
  • Assists with successful operation of the team processes and in coordinating staff schedule to ensure that client needs are met and all fitness hours covered. Assists in orienting and training staff in proper use of exercise equipment. Cares for exercise equipment and ensures that quality checks performed on equipment such as Glucometer.
  • Serves as department resource and communication liaison for all fitness programs. Develops and monitors fitness participant satisfaction to elicit feedback and gears services to meet fitness needs. Serves on hospital-wide teams as appropriate. Communicates, answers questions and responds to physicians, nurses and other medical staff on information concerning orders, patient progress reports and program details.
  • Performs various patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required.

Education Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science.

Experience Required:

  • No experience required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks/projects and demonstrated flexibility.
  • Skills needed: Teamwork, basic computer, critical thinking in a complex clinical situation.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to stand and/or walk approximately 80% of the workday.
  • Must be able to sit, squat, bend, twist and reach above shoulders throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to:
  • lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist.
  • lift up to 10 lbs. from waist to overhead.
  • lift and carry up to 40 lbs. at waist height a reasonable distance.
  • Must be able to:
  • push/pull with 30 lbs. of force.
  • perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present
  • Position requires repetitive use of hands. (grasping, pushing/pulling, fine manipulation)
  • Must have functional speech, vision, smell, touch and hearing.
  • May be exposed to dust and/or dirt.
  • May be exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards as well as blood and body fluids; therefore, protective clothing must be worn as necessary.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
