Schedule Details/Additional Information:
This is for application to the ACL School of Histotechnology – a one-year intensive program. This application is the first step in a multi-step application and review process.

We are seeking applications for the Winter and Spring Histology School Programs. Applicants being considered will be contacted by the histology team for additional application instructions and information.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Develops proficiency and knowledge in the theory of Histology through lectures, reading assignments, and demonstrations.
  • Participates in the preparation of surgical pathology specimens.
  • Identifies tissue, their functions and structures both macroscopically and microscopically.
  • Maintains, cleans and trouble shoots equipment.
  • Ascertains and maintains accurate patient and specimen identification. Participates in data entry and editing of cases in the Anatomic Pathology computer system.
  • Becomes skilled at the Histology module functions in the Anatomic Pathology computer system and other computer functions as needed.
  • Develops the skills of embedding tissue, cutting sections for placement on slides, staining, cover slipping, labeling and distributing slides and cases.
  • Develops the skill of cutting fresh tissue for frozen section slides with accuracy and speed.
  • Gains skill in theory and practical knowledge of Special Stains and Immunohistochemistry.
  • Maintains filing systems for tissues, slides, blocks, productivity, and records documentation.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • None Required.

Education Required:

  • Associate's Degree in Biology or related field.

Experience Required:

  • No experience required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Demonstrated organizational ability and attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and ability to build rapport and relate to all kinds of people.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Must operate all equipment necessary to perform the duties of the job.
  • Must have fine motor skills to manipulate minute, irreproducible specimens.
  • Must be able to concentrate on minute detail with frequent interruptions.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for prolonged periods of time in order to complete required data entry, filing, embedding, and cutting of tissue, distribution of materials and other related functions
  • Must be able to continuously use a keyboard.
  • Occasionally lifts items weighing up to 20 lbs.
  • Must have functional speech, vision, and hearing.
