Major Responsibilities:

  • Maintains the operates system-wide program for provision of formal and informal consultations to patients, their families, professional staff and institutional committees on ethical and policy issues and concerns stemming from clinical interactions between health care professionals and patients, and between researchers and research subjects.
  • Provides ethics consultation to sites as needed and provides direction for Clinical Ethicists and others providing ethics services. Pursues continuing ethics education opportunities including meaningful contributions to bioethics field and keeps abreast of ethical issues in the healthcare landscape.
  • Directs or collaborates with other departments and community partners to address ethical issues in community health. Ensures that site ethics committees and other key leaders have education and resources needed to carry out their work to promote and deliver ethics curriculum at sites of care.
  • Directs development of system ethics policies and provides input for the review, development, and revision of site or department policies pertaining to ethics.
  • Directs the Ethics Internship and/or Fellowship including the recruitment process, curriculum development, and evaluation process.
  • Contributes to the development and implementation of the Ethics Program strategic plan at system and site level, including preparation of the quarterly Ethics Program Dashboard and/or Ethics Scan.
  • Supports regular meetings of the chairs of site ethics committees and others who are regularly involved in ethics issues.
  • In collaboration with the Ethics Manager, establishes best practices for clinical ethics consultation process including the consultation request process and notification; consultation documentation; facilitation of consultation meeting; and post-consultation feedback and debrief with team members and ethics committee members.
  • Develops, implements, and supports quality control initiatives to enhance excellence in performance outcomes: assesses need, develops approach, monitors implementation, evaluates and reports outcomes.
  • Provides support to sites in meeting Accrediting Organization standards in patient rights and organizational ethics and in preparing for Accrediting Organization surveys. Contributes to organizational ethics programs and initiatives through the Ethics Resource Center to provide education, recommendations, and ethical analysis for team members and leadership.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • None Required.

Education Required:

  • Master's Degree in Health Care Ethics, or
  • Master's Degree in Philosophy, or
  • Master's Degree in Theology or related field.

Experience Required:

  • Typically requires 7 years of experience in clinical ethics working in a healthcare environment. Typically requires 3 years of management experience in clinical ethics.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Availability for on call consultation as needed during off shifts and weekends
  • Ability to work in stressful situations, with incomplete information, under time pressure, and with emotionally distraught people.
  • Skilled in planning and delivering educational content to a variety of learners
  • Ability to relate and communicate across a variety of disciplines.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, the ability to work and function in a complex corporate system environment.
  • Ability to function as mentor and role

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • This position requires travel, therefore, will be exposed to weather and road conditions.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
  • Exposed to a normal office environment.
