Schedule Details/Additional Information:
Full-time day shift hours from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Every 3rd weekend required.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Proficiently and independently perform a minimum of 4 of the Infectious Disease molecular benches and a minimum of 3 of the Real-Time PCR / liquid bead array based Molecular Genetic benches, which are composed of different assays. 
  • Proficiently and independently perform one of the highly complex molecular assays, based on Fragment Analysis, Sequencing or Mass Array. Responsible for issuing a diagnostic report on all specimens within the TAT. Recognizes abnormal results and inhibitory specimens. Recognizes the homozygous wild type, homozygous mutant and heterozygous genotypes; Correlates the data from the graphs and the software calls. Recognizes unusual mutations and confirms them.
  • Responsible for issuing a diagnostic report on all specimens within the allotted 8-hour day. Recognizes abnormal results and inhibitory specimens. Recognizes the critical results and repeats them before reporting. Notifies physician with critical results and documents the notification. Prepares master mixes and controls and validates them before implementation. For Quantitative assays performs and evaluates Calibration curve for validation of a new master mix.
  • Performs, monitors, and evaluates quality control, applies the principles of quality control when reporting results. Monitors and records all QC data in the proper manner to worksheets and online. Takes appropriate corrective action when necessary and documents. Performs validation and calibration of instruments. Follows established Laboratory safety procedure in accordance with those of regulatory bodies such as OSHA, FDA, EPA, NRC, etc.
  • Operates all equipment essential in performing the job. Monitors preventive maintenance program according to departmental maintenance schedule. Performs maintenance and troubleshoots malfunctioning instrumentation. Initiates service calls to restore full operation.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of supplies as required by the department. Follows up on backorders, missing, and incorrect orders. Participates in development and education. Teaches bench level methodology and theory to new and existing associates and students.
  • Correlates various clinical laboratory test results, applies these results to clinical conditions and recognizes accepted normal ranges. Initiates follow-up procedures when patient results are outside normal range according to departmental policy.
  • Evaluates and validates new methodology. Participates in interdepartmental cross-training as required.
  • Identification and resolution of technical problems related to laboratory methodology, instrumentation, and procedures under direction of the Supervisor/Technical Director. Identifies and solves technical problems related to laboratory methodology including instrumentation and procedures under the direction of Supervisor/Technical Director.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • License/Registration/Certification Required: MB(ASCP) Technologist in Molecular Biology
  • Education Required: Bachelor’s Degree in a related science field.
  • Experience Required: Typically requires 3 years of training and/or experience with laboratory equipment and methodologies related to area of responsibility.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Previous experience with laboratory equipment and methodologies related to areas of responsibility. Clinical internship may be equivalent to experience.
  • Basic computer literacy

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Hazardous chemical exposure and contact with infectious biological specimens and sharps are experienced on a daily basis.
  • Position requires ability to consistently handle multi-tasking, meet established timeframes, and recognize assignments that may be delegated.
  • Some instrumentation and work counter are higher than table height. Fast paced environment with established time constraints. Ability to routinely safeguard and handle irretrievable specimen types.
