Job Summary:

The unit has 12 OR suites in the main hospital and 6 state of the art operating rooms in the Outpatient Center for Advanced Care. The surgical services division also provides pre and post-operative care focusing on the education of patients and families and providing smooth transitions between settings for the best patient outcomes. The OR performs all specialty surgeries except transplants, and offers state-of-the-art equipment and services. The surgery department is staffed 24 hours during the week.

The First Assist will serve as assistant to the surgeon during surgical procedure and is guided by the ANA Code of Ethics for nurses.

Position Requirements:
    • Performs preoperative patient assessment and teaching.
    • Recognizes safety hazards and initiates appropriate corrective action.
    • Applies principles of asepsis and infection control skillfully.
    • Applies knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology and operative technique relative to operative procedures wherein the Registered Nurse First Assistant assists.
    • Performs positioning, prepping and draping of patient.
    • Provides hemostasis by clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points, ligating vessels and by other means as directed by the surgeon.
    • Provides exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning and sponging techniques.
    • Handles tissue as directed by the surgeon during the operative procedure.
    • Performs wound closure as directed by the surgeon: sutures the peritoneum, fascia, subcutaneous tissue and skin.
    • Applies surgical dressings.
    • Assists with transferring the patient from the operating room.
    • Performs postoperative patient evaluation and teaching.

    Physical Requirements
    Work requires walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, stooping, bending, pushing, and pulling. Must be able to lift and support the weight of 35 pounds in handling patients, medical equipment, and supplies. Must speak English in good, understandable terms. Intact sense of sight, hearing, smell, and touch. Finger dexterity. Critical thinking and ability to concentrate. Must be able to respond quickly to changes in patient and/or unit conditions. Physical Abilities Testing required.

    Education, Experience and Certifications

    Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing. BSN preferred.

    BLS

    Completion of accredited course in Registered Nurse First Assistant program.

    Two years recent perioperative nursing experience required.

    CNOR certification required.

    Current RN license
