Schedule Details/Additional Information:
1st shift, weekdays (M-F), 8 hrs each day generally between 0800-1630 with some flexibility with start/end times. Some evening, holiday, weekend coverage as needed, though rare.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Performs reagent preparation and quality control, including measuring, mixing, calculating, completing documentation and data collection/entry according to polices and procedures.
  • Processes and ships biospecimens according to protocol.
  • Collaborates with other departments to obtain appropriate information and/or research and biological specimens as appropriate.
  • Orders, receives, stocks supplies; maintains appropriate inventory of commonly used chemicals, solutions, supplies; removes outdated materials as appropriate.
  • Performs minor preventative maintenance, adjustments and repairs on equipment to ensure instruments proper function.
  • Washes, sterilizes, decontaminates laboratory equipment and facilities.
  • Assists with performance of experimental procedures and basic biological/chemical assays, data analysis, literature searches, preparation of standard operating procedures and reports as needed.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • None Required.

Education Required:

  • Associate’s Degree (or equivalent knowledge) in Biology, or
  • Associate’s Degree (or equivalent knowledge) in Chemistry or related field.

Experience Required:

  • Typically requires 2 years of experience in college-level course work with laboratory component.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of and ability to conduct, document and analyze basic laboratory assays with supervision
  • Ability to perform measuring/pipetting and operate laboratory and computer equipment
  • Basic personal computer skills including Microsoft Office suite of programs
  • Ability to work as a member of a diverse team
  • Ability to work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work/take on-call rotation some evenings and weekends to accommodate research lab needs.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time as well as stand and walk throughout each workday.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, lift (approximately 40 lbs.), squat, bend, twist, kneel, and reach above the shoulders at various times in each workday.
  • Occasionally moves 50-60 lbs. at shoulder level (heavy carboys).
  • Fine hand motor manipulation required for performing measuring/pipetting and operation of laboratory and computer equipment.
  • May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, biological (blood and body fluid) radiation hazards; and therefore, personal protective equipment must be worn as necessary.
  • Must have functional speech, vision, smell, touch, and hearing.
  • In some lab areas such as the animal lab, will come in contact to animals and/or dander; therefore should not have allergies to animals/dander.
