Schedule Details/Additional Information:
Pool chaplain position. Variable hours as needed, mostly overnight and weekend on-call, but some day hours may be available.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with staff to assess, address and document the spiritual and emotional needs of patients and their families.
  • Triage and minister amidst crises, loss and grief.
  • Contacts clergy of other faiths as requested by patients and families.
  • Provides sacraments as appropriate in their faith and the situation.
  • Provides spiritual and emotional support to staff as needed.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department’s policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • None Required.

Education Required:

  • Master’s Degree (or equivalent knowledge) in Religious Studies, or
  • Master’s Degree (or equivalent knowledge) in Theology, or
  • Master’s Degree (or equivalent knowledge) in Divinity or related field.

Experience Required:

  • Typically requires 1 year of experience in ministry. Minimum of two units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) which includes one unit granted by the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE). Second unit may be granted by Healthcare Chaplains Ministry Association (HCMA). Must obtain units within two years of hire.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Self-awareness that includes knowledge of one’s feelings, attitudes, values, assumptions, strengths and weaknesses, and how these affect one’s spiritual care.
  • Ability to work amidst crisis situations in calm non-anxious manner.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate emotional, physical and spiritual boundaries.
  • Ability to communicate and document efficiently using electronic media.
  • Ability to care spiritually for persons of other or no faith without sharing one’s personal convictions.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • May be exposed to blood and body fluids; therefore, personal protective equipment must be worn as necessary.
  • Availability and transportation to serve on-call rotation as needed.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, and bend throughout the workday.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
