Schedule Details/Additional Information:
Rotating start time between 7:00 and 8:00. Monday -Friday. Rotating call required to finish cases up to 4 hours after shift ends.Orthopedic and eye experience preferred.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Preparation and maintenance of the sterile field
    •     1)Assists in obtaining all necessary supplies and equipment required to perform a surgical procedure
    •     2)Prepares and maintains the sterile field by placing instrumentation, drapes and supplies in the prescribed arrangement
    •     3)Ensures all counted items on the surgical field are accounted for as described in the Surgical Count Policies
    •     4)Informs the Team Leader of changes to the physician preference cards
    •     5)Ensures proper handling and care of each surgical specimen
  • Functions in the scrub role on surgical procedures as a member of the surgical team
    •     1)Ensures that the appropriate instruments and supplies are available as determined by the individual surgeon preference card
    •     2)Assists the surgeon and other team members in gowning and gloving and the draping of the surgical field
    •     3)Anticipates the needs of the surgeon as demonstrated by having all items required readily available on the sterile field
    •     4)Ensures the safety needs of the patient are maintained
    •     5)Utilizes appropriate PPE at all times at the surgical field
    •     6)Handles equipment and, sharps and hazardous material and instrumentation in a safe manner which ensures a safe environment
    •     7)Labels all medication & solutions placed on the surgical field.
    •     8)Participates in the surgical “Time out” and does not allow the procedure to continue to all team members agree.
  • Participates in maintaining the readiness of the Operating Room
    •     1)Returns instruments and equipment to proper areas of the Operating Room and Sterile Core
    •     2)Restocks OR suites as necessary
    •     3)Informs Team Leader of any malfunctions related to the instrumentation and equipment. Tags affected items and removes item from service
    •     4)Maintains all work areas in a clean and orderly fashion
  • Maintains professional work environment
    •     1)Takes departmental trauma/specialty call as assigned
    •     2)Participates in the orientation of new staff and students
    •     3)Serves as a resource related to area of specialization
    •     4)Demonstrates flexibility related to assignments and work hours
    •     5)Follows all established policies
    •     6)Maintains positive working relationship with other staff members
    •     7)Serves as a mentor to other staff related to clinical issues. Readily shares knowledge and experience concerning surgical procedures
    •     8)Participates in the education of others in the Operating Room by serving in the role of preceptor for areas of expertise
    •     9)Promotes patient safety by reporting of issues through established channels and participating as requested in safety initiatives.
    •     10)Maintains patient confidentiality
  • Demonstrates accountability for own self development
    •     1)Identifies learning needs and actively seeks out opportunities to address needs
    •     2)Completes all developmental goals and competencies within the established timeframe.
    •     3)Maintains Educational record.
    •     4)Maintains Certification
    •     5)Participates on unit/hospital committees and projects
    •     6)Maintains 10 CEU’s annually

Education/Experience Required:

  • • Graduate from an accredited Surgical Technologist Program ARC-STSA(CAAHEP- Commision on Accredidation of Allied Health Education Programs) • This position will need to recognize the needs and behaviors of a variety of age groups of patients treated, i.e. understand child growth and development, normal patterns of adolescent behavior and look for signs of normal aging; prior experience with various age groups is preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • • Ability to work well with internal and external customers • Fine motor skills • Ability to wear a surgical mask and gloves • Auditory skills which allow incumbent to hear individuals whose speech may be muffled
  • • CPR certified • Certified Surgical Technologist certification from the NBSTSA (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting)

Physicial Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • • Ability to work under stressful conditions and in difficult situations • May be exposed to hazardous materials and life threatening diseases heavy lifting in accordance with DOL definition • Ability to work rotating shifts and day of the week and take call as needed • Ability to work in a fast paced environment with established time constraints. • Ability to communicate with mask on and not facing others. Ability to work quickly and accurately
  • If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Addendum: Operating room experience may be required. Surgical experience in the following areas may be required: adult and pediatric open heart, heart transplant, and VAD
