Schedule Details/Additional Information:
Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Flexibility to attend later meetings as needed. Position will work both onsite at Good Shepherd in Barrington, IL and will support community based events.
Major Responsibilities:
- Provides Medicare navigation, advocacy and counseling to Medicare eligible individuals and their families as a certified Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) Medicare counselor sponsored by the Illinois Dept on Aging
- Provides community resources, information, and assistance to older adults and their caregivers
- Identify areas of customer need and interest to determine focus of Senior Services Department programing
- Promotes relevant hospital services and programing to senior community in various settings both inside hospital and out in community
- Coordinates and implements monthly on-site senior health related educational programming
- Represents the hospital out in the community by providing educational seminars and volunteering on community task force, coalitions and board of directors
- Participates in internal hospital committees as the voice of the senior population to address and improve patient experience
- Assist teammates in care management, patient access, financial advocate and other departments with patients that have Medicare insurance problems and other areas of need.
- Internal subject matter expert on the current needs and environment of the local senior community.
Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required: SHIP Counseling Certification obtained within 6 months of hire.
Education Required: Bachelor’s degree in related field and/or 5-6 years’ experience working with senior population specifically in identifying and assisting older adults & caregivers with social needs.
Experience Required: SHIP Counseling experience highly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required: Program planning and organizational skills required with the ability to communicate clearly and collaborate with others. Expertise in Medicare, Medicaid, & commercial medical insurance and aptitude to keep up with ever changing environment. Bilingual a plus.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Cultural competency/humility in interactions with senior population. Ability to travel off campus, throughout hospital service area. Knowledge of hospital services and programs. Computer savvy and able to navigate multiple platforms of communication technology.
