Major Responsibilities:
- Under general supervision of a pharmacist, performs duties of a pharmacy technician such as: filling medication orders, delivering medications, compounding sterile and non-sterile preparations, interviewing patients to obtain medication histories, etc.
- Provides pharmacy services to the patient care areas and customers by performing clerical duties in the pharmacy to ensure efficient operations and performs duties related to medication ordering, receipt, stocking, and inventory control.
- Receives and interprets prescriptions for outpatients and enters them into the pharmacy computer system.
- May learn to check medications prior to dispensing under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
- Under the supervision of a pharmacist, may contact and confer with physicians concerning the appropriate drug, dose, dosing interval, drug allergy, drug-drug interaction, etc., as it relates to documentation of a home medication list as part of a medication history. May provide medication information to other healthcare providers.
- Under the supervision of a pharmacist, may review patient profiles and document clinical interventions, recommendations, and assessments in the electronic health record in accordance with institutional policies, professional standards, and state pharmacy laws.
- Assists patients, customers, and other caregivers as needed to obtain prescribed and over-the-counter medications.
- Adheres to the general hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships, and team building.
Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:
- Intern registration: NC, SC, GA
- Licensure: GA (intern), IL (tech)
- Permit: AL
- Certification: SC
- Tech registration: WI
Education Required:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent and current enrollment in an accredited College of Pharmacy in the 3rd or 4th year of the program or equivalent sessions if enrolled in an accelerated program required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
- Proficient computer skills
- Works well with management and pharmacy staff
- Solid communication, analytical, and organizational skills
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, bend, kneel, climb, twist, crawl and reach above shoulders
- Requires considerable walking, standing, pushing mobile cart of approximately 50 pounds and lifting 35 pounds of material
- Must have functional vision, touch and hearing
- Must be able to speak and be understood by others to communicate effectively
- May be exposed to chemical and hazardous waste as well as blood and body fluids and communicable disease for which appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is utilized to minimize exposure
- Frequent fine motor motion of hands and wrists to perform manipulative skills such as writing, typing, data entry into the computer, and preparation of medications, including use of syringes
- Takes necessary precautions to avoid inadvertent needle sticks, minor cuts or bruises. Exposed to various conditions throughout the workday such as walking on hard surfaces, climbing stairs and changes in temperature and humidity.
